Wednesday we took a day trip to see Nimes and Pont du Gard, about 45 minutes north of Montpellier. The town of Nimes has some of the best-preserved Roman architecture in all of Europe, including the most complete amphitheatre from Roman times. First we saw some statues and smaller temples that had been excavated. Then we walked into town more to see their main temple, which was still in good shape. The Roman amphitheatre was the most impressive—huge and quite well preserved. It’s still used today for tennis matches, concerts and bullfights. After a delicious lunch at Le Paseo in Nimes, we drove just outside the city to the Pont du Gard—a massive Roman aquaduct used to transport water to the city back in the day. It was huge—spanning over the river underneath. We got to walk around the aquaduct and the river for the afternoon before enjoying some local wine from Nimes with our guide Jeremy.
